Philippe Mendes

Philippe Mendes opened the Galerie Mendes in Paris in 2007, with a particular interest in French, Italian and Spanish painting from the 16th to the 19th centuries. He is also committed to presenting and raising awareness of Portuguese art, to which he has devoted several exhibitions.

About twice a year, Philippe Mendes organises a thematic exhibition that bears witness to his passion and rigour for exceptional works. A catalogue, written in collaboration with eminent experts and curators, accompanies one of these exhibitions.

He regularly collaborates with museums and institutions, sensitive to the unpublished works that have made his reputation.

( 1856-1939)

Portrait d’homme de profil

Oil on canvas
dated and monogrammed “S. P. Porto 1875”
Height: 46 cm; Width: 37.5 cm

Our work, dated 1875, is early in the artist’s production. However, it demonstrates a confident technique, acquired by the painter both in the spontaneity of brushstrokes and in the psychology of his proud model. The painter is then 19 years old and already masters his art.

Recognized as one of the greatest Portuguese painters of his time, he is representative of artists from all nations who gather in Paris at the end of the 19th century in the cultural effervescence of the City of Light.
