Stalbemt’s winter landscapes are particularly rare in his work. This one is a tribute to Pieter Brueghel the Elder and his winter landscapes of the 1560’s, notably The Birds’ Trap and Hunters in the Snow, which opened a pictorial tradition that would continue throughout the 16th and 17th centuries and which finds its source in the Little Ice Age experienced throughout Europe in the 16th century.
The composition here is articulated around a large diagonal drawn by the icy waters. Scattered figures accompany our gaze and invite it to travel to the background of the landscape. In the foreground, hunters are focused on birds (a true pictorial quotation of Peter Bruegel’s Trap of the Birds) beyond skaters on a frozen canal. The rich shades of blue and ochre bring a winter wonderland to the whole and give it a poetic dimension.
